Gbemi Arubi's first goal at Oriel Park this year proved decisive as Dundalk piled the pressure on Derry City ahead of the mid-season break.
Despite six goals on the road so far in 2026 the striker, who turned 22 on Tuesday, hadn’t found the net at the Carrick Road venue since scoring in the Louth side’s 3-0 win over Finn Harps last October when Ciarán Kilduff’s side clinched the First Division title.
His close range finish on the hour mark was the difference, however, coming just a minute after Cameron Dummigan had cancelled out Daryl Horgan’s first half opener.
The victory opens up a seven point gap between the sides and piles further pressure on Tiernan Lynch, whose side have now gone seven games without a win for the second time this season.
With just four wins from 20 matches, the Belfast man will face further question marks from the Derry support. By contrast, it has been an incredible first half of the season for the Louth men, who continue to be the league’s surprise package despite a host of injury problems.
The home side started well on top and threatened for the first time inside the opening two minutes as quick free kick from Aodh Dervin played Eoin Kenny in behind the Candystripes defence only for Eddie Beach to be braver in coming for the ball.
The Welsh netminder was called into action once again two minutes later when he saved from Declan McDaid in a one-on-one. The follow-up cross from JR Wilson was headed down by Arubi to Kenny whose effort deflected wide off Jamie Stott when already going wide.
The pressure finally told when the Lilywhites hit the front on 20 minutes in what was a wonderful team move. Arubi flicked the ball down to Kenny, who played Horgan in behind Conor Barr before the former Republic of Ireland international slotted past Beach to the bottom right hand corner with his left foot.
Dundalk were unlucky not to double their lead three minutes later when Tyreke Wilson’s shot from range cannoned back off the underside of the crossbar but the Louth men had a let-off on 25 minutes when Ben Doherty dragged a shot inches wide in what was Derry’s first meaningful attack.
Horgan would go close again before the break with Brandon Fleming also firing tamely at Enda Minogue but Dundalk will feel they should have had a penalty three minutes before the break when Kevin Dos Santos shoved Tyreke Wilson to the ground inside the box but Oliver Moran somehow failed to point to the spot.
Lynch turned to his bench at half-time with Michael Duffy, Patrick McClean and Darragh Markey all introduced but despite some initial pressure from the visitors it was Dundalk who had the first chance of note at the start of the second half with Kenny firing well off target.
Derry were then fortunate not to be down to 10 on 54 minutes when the already booked Thomas clattered Minogue late only for the incident to be missed completely by the referee.
The Welsh striker was immediately replaced by Liam Boyce with Dundalk’s groans growing louder when the visitors equalised on 59 minutes. Duffy’s corner was headed clear by JR Wilson only to be met first-time on the volley by Dummigan, with his effort crossing the line via the underside of the crossbar.
The home side’s response was almost instant as they levelled on the hour mark with another brilliant team goal. Tyreke Wilson released Horgan on the left with the 33-year-old’s first time cross turned home by Arubi for what was his first goal at Oriel Park this season.
Duffy did have a chance to level again on 70 minutes when he found space on the left but crashed his shot into the side-netting. He would have another chance five minutes later when he met Fleming’s cross with his head but on this occasion Minogue did well to palm it away.
James Clarke then had an effort on 87 minutes that Minogue had to claw behind but despite six minutes of additional time it was the home side who went closest to a further goal with Danny Mullen curling wide.
