Séamus Coleman to Coventry would be 'brilliant' - Alan Cawley

A switch to newly-promoted Coventry City could be the perfect landing spot for Séamus Coleman, according to Alan Cawley.

After 17 years at Everton, the Republic of Ireland veteran made his final home appearance for the Toffees as a late substitute in Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Sunderland.

While Everton would be keen to keep their long-time captain at the club as part of the coaching staff, Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson still wants the Donegal man to be part of his squad on the road towards Euro 2028.

The 37-year-old has been included in the Irish squad for the upcoming friendlies against Qatar and Canada.

After that, the former Sligo Rovers player will make a decision as to what he does next in his career over the summer.

Speaking on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast, Cawley said he thought Everton could have benefited from keeping Coleman within their squad.

"It probably surprised me a little bit that he didn't see out his career there. It sounds to me like he wants to play on," he said.

"And the only reason I think he wants to play on is he feels he can still do a job but also moreso from our point of view, from an international point of view, I think he still feels as though he has something to offer there.

"Of course, Heimir Hallgrimsson will want him and said he's wanted him to stay on. But I don't think he'll be able to pick him if he's still just a bit-part player at Everton like he was this season.

"I think he'll need to go out and maybe play a bit more regular and whether that's dropping down to the Championship or whatever the case may be, that'll be fine as well.

"But I also have a sneaky feeling as well with Coventry getting promoted and (Frank) Lampard loves him, it wouldn't surprise me to see him rock up at Coventry.

"Because it would be a brilliant move for him and would still keep him somewhere where he would probably play most weeks.

"But also from Lampard's point of view, it would be an unbelievable fella to bring into the dressing room with the move into the Premier League, so it could be a win-win for everyone. That's just something that crossed my mind over the weekend."

Cawley added that he would have liked to see Coleman get a more fitting send-off from Hill Dickinson Stadium than the one he received.

"I was a little bit disappointed I have to be honest with the send-off he got," said the Sligo native.

"I thought the Everton fans could have done a little bit more for him. It looked like a half-empty stadium after the match.

"I looked at (Antoine) Griezmann's send-off (on Sunday) night and it was like a concert - it was unbelievable the Spanish fans what they did for Griezmann and rightly so - and I think Seamus should have deserved something like that."
