'It was the best players in the country at the time' - Barry Murphy on the LOI-centric Ireland Under-23s of yore

While Heimir Hallgrimsson did not call up any current League of Ireland players into his training squad for Murcia, the Republic of Ireland manager has been pushing the case for a January camp that would be dedicated to domestic-based talent.

Whether the timing would suit LOI clubs in the midst of pre-season is another matter but the FAI are exploring the potential of facilitating Hallgrimsson's desire to do so.

Back in 2007-08 and then between 2009 and 2011, an Ireland Under-23 selection played a similar role in bringing together a largely LOI-based squad for the International Challenge Trophy.

Ex-Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic goalkeeper Barry Murphy was part of the earlier squads under Pat Fenlon, and from his recollections on this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast, it did have its benefits for those in the U23 fold between 2007 and 2011.

"It was trying to bridge the gap between '21s - a lot of us had played '21s - and the first team," he said.

"Listen, it's your first taste of international football, different environment, different pressures and I loved it.

"It was the best players in the country at the time and you're just hoping somebody comes out of that camp and stands up, and for us it was Séamus Coleman.

"He went to Everton then the next season and he was excellent in those games and brilliant in the league and it was just a shop window, that's what we need."

Hallgrimsson will name another squad after Saturday's friendly against Grenada for a fixture against Qatar at the end of the month, while World Cup co-hosts Canada await in early June.

That could potentially see one or two LOI players called up, although the timing coincides with a busy period for the leading clubs who will have an eye on being ready for European qualifiers.

"You look at the players in the league at the moment and the managers are pushing them forward for places in these Ireland squads," Murphy added.

"You need a window to go and show that and obviously in this window, there's nobody been added to it and that was probably designed that way.

"But the next window I think there's a great chance. The only thing about it is you're coming into the European games in July, so that (next) window you're thinking there's a lot of Friday-Monday games (for) Bohs, Rovers, Pat's and the players you're thinking might get a leg up into that Ireland team.

"There's a lot of games in that period of time so it will be interesting to see if the managers do eventually release them."
