Hans Mpongo's hat-trick saw Cork overcome UCD

A Hans Mpongo hat-trick got Cork City back to winning ways and back on top of the First Division table by overcoming leaders UCD in front of 2,187 fans at Turner's Cross.

The 23-year-old Dutchman took his season tally to seven, bringing him within one of strike partner Seani Maguire in the Golden Boot standings. More importantly, it moves his side three clear of the Students while still holding a game in hand.

Following a pair of historic derby defeats – a first home league loss to Cobh Ramblers and Kerry’s first victory over City – the Shed End supporters renewed their protests against the club’s direction.

Four banners displayed messages reading: 'Players - inept’, ‘Management - incompetent’, ‘Ownership - a joke’, ‘Usher - sell up!’

With Charlie Lyons suspended, Rory Feely’s return from injury proved well-timed. Barry Robson also restored midfielders Greg Bolger and Josh Fitzpatrick. Ruairí Keating and Niall O’Keeffe dropped to the bench.

In the opposite dugout, William O’Connor called Louis Dignam and Killian Cailloce into the UCD midfield. If City’s confidence was rocked by recent results, they gained an immediate antidote. With just 45 seconds on the clock, Mikey McCullagh caught Darragh Crowley with a high boot on the edge of the box and Daryl Carolan pointed to the spot.

Dara Kavanagh briefly looked to have rescued his teammate when saving Maguire’s penalty, but the rebound fell for Mpongo to sweep home.

UCD were almost punished for playing around at the back. Bolger charged down a Kavanagh clearance and Carl Lennox beat his keeper with a backpass. Both times, the ball spun wide.City had a close call when Hugh Smith backheeled the ball onto the post. It wouldn’t have counted either way as the linesman flagged him for offside.

There was a wait for the next chance to arrive. When it did, Cillian Murphy’s shot was blocked by Luca Cailloce before recycling for Crowley to flash over the bar.

City had chances either side of half-time from a pair of corners. Feely flicked a header wide in first-half stoppage time before Harry Nevin’s half-volley was diverted over by Niall Holohan after the break.

UCD made a double sub, but they had no time to settle as City scored in the very next play. Nevin was the architect, exchanging a one-two with Bolger and skinning Luca Cailloce before steering a low cross for Mpongo to tap in. The right-back took most of the plaudits from his celebrating teammates.

UCD could’ve got back into it with a dozen minutes remaining. Dignam tidied up a potential breakaway and stood up a cross for Mikey Raggett, who should’ve scored, but couldn’t get over the ball.

With that chance slipping away, City made three subs. Moments later, they had their third goal. Mpongo was crowded out, but Bolger won the ball back and dinked it into the box. Maguire nodded across for Mpongo to head home his hat-trick.

Conor Brann played through an early injury and was alert to deny Ciarán Behan. He was robbed of his fifth clean sheet of the season in stoppage time after parrying Goodness Ogbonna’s shot into Raggett’s path.

A first-half Ben McCormack hat-trick propelled Bray Wanderers to a resounding 5-1 win at home to Cobh Ramblers at the Carlisle Grounds.

The game was effectively over at half-time as a trio of McCormack goals put Bray 3-0 up the break, the hat-trick being completed with a scooped goal reminiscent of Karol Poborsky.

John Bilili Sesay made it 4-0 just before the hour mark. Rhys Kelly-Noonan responded for what was already a consolation goal for the visitors before Tyreik Sammy rounded off the rout in the final 10 minutes.

Longford Town upset third placed Wexford FC with a 2-1 win in Ferrycarrig Park. Aaron Doran scored twice for the away team, availing of a shanked clearance from the goalkeeper to put them ahead in the first half.

He doubled their lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. Jake Doyle pulled one back in injury-time for Wexford but the midlanders held out to claim their fourth win of the season.

Max Hutchinson's headed goal deep in injury-time gave Finn Harps a 1-0 victory over Kerry FC, the Ballybofey club putting some distance between themselves and the league's bottom two sides.

In the night's other game, Athlone Town were frustrated at home to bottom placed Treaty United, who held out for a goalless draw.
