Arsenal stance over Katie McCabe future is 'baffling' - Rachel Graham

Former Republic of Ireland international Rachel Graham is mystified by Arsenal's stance regarding Katie McCabe's future at the club.

The Girls in Green captain has been a stalwart for the Gunners since signing from Shelbourne in 2015 and recently made her 300th appearance for the north Londoners.

However, it looks like the 30-year-old will be allowed to leave when her contract expires at the end of the season, with the club linked with a move to bring in Spain and Barcelona full-back Ona Batlle.

McCabe was involved on Saturday live on RTÉ when then holders Arsenal bowed out of the Women's Champions League after a second-leg defeat to Lyon.

And based on her recent displays, Shels midfielder Graham believes the Dubliner still has a lot to offer at the top level.

"I think Arsenal are a bit nuts not to give her an offer," she said on this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast.

"She's 30 now, that's not that old and you know Katie keeps herself so professional (and) in shape.

"There's talk of Batlle coming in. But I think with Katie, you know what you're getting. She's proven herself there.

"It's a bit of an unknown getting a new player in, whereas Katie, you know she's going to give you everything, you know she still has top performances in her, she's still one of their best players.

"So for me, if I was Arsenal, I'd be trying to keep her."

If McCabe does indeed depart for pastures new, she will not be short of offers. Among the clubs linked with her signature are Manchester City who are on course to win the Women's Super League.

"Man City is obviously a huge club, a huge team as well. She wouldn't have to leave the country so that's appealing for her," Graham said.

"I'd say she wants to stay at Arsenal. I can't see her wanting to leave or even to go abroad at this stage.

"There were talks about going to America. But I think she could probably do that later on in her career or go somewhere else later.

"She definitely has another three or four years of playing at the top level. It hasn't been decided yet, (and) we've seen other players coming out of contract as well, so there's obviously talks going on in the background.

"But it's probably not looking likely (that she will stay) and we will probably see her in a new shirt next year.

"But for me, at Arsenal, she's tried and tested and you know what you're getting and she definitely has another three or four years in her. So it is a bit baffling that they're not doing everything they can to keep her I think."
