Derry City had substitute Kevin Dos Santos to thank for a hard-fought share of the spoils against Galway United at Find Insurance Celtic Park.
City manager Tiernan Lynch will be a relieved man as the Portuguese winger cancelled out James Clarke's first half own-goal, as the Foylesiders were again disappointing for long periods.
Both teams were below-par in an underwhelming contest where a point a piece was probably a fair result.
Derry had the first attempt on 19 minutes as Barry Cotter's long throw-in from the left found Patrick McClean, but his header from 10 yards was straight at United keeper Evan Watts.
Just after the half-hour mark Francely Lomboto broke in behind the Derry defence, but the big striker was denied by City net-minder Eddie Beach, who raced off his line to block the effort.
Watts had to make a top drawer save on 41 minutes as Clarke's stunning piece of skill ended with the midfielder's volley on the turn which was flying into the top right corner, but the goalkeeper somehow closed the effort away.
Minutes later Akinyemi showed good strength to create some space on the edge of the box, but his left-footed strike was straight at Watts.
The visitors took the lead in bizarre circumstances as Aaron Bolger's flick-on at the near post was deflected into his own net by the unfortunate Clarke, who in truth couldn't get out of the way.
United went close to doubling their lead on 48 minutes as the lively Lomboto again raced at the Derry defence, but his low effort from 12 yards was kept out by a diving Beach.
Watts was called into action just after the hour mark when another Cotter long throw-in found McClean, but the defender's header from close range was easily gathered by the United goalkeeper.
City equalised on 92 minutes after Dos Santos showed unbelievable skill to skip away from a few challenges inside the box, before his lovely side footed curling effort found Watts' bottom left hand corner.
With their tails up Derry went close to scoring a second as more good play by Dos Santos released Henry Rylah, his first time right wing cross found Michael Duffy at the back post, but after rising high he headed wide.
