Gheorghe Hagi has been appointed Romania manager 25 years after last doing the job.
The former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder, who is widely recognised as Romania's greatest player, has signed a four-year contract taking through the Euro 2028 and 2030 World Cup cycles.
"It is an honour and a great responsibility to represent Romania once again," the 61-year-old told reporters at his unveiling in Bucharest.
"I am convinced that we can achieve beautiful things. I hope that the performances I had as a player, I will also have as a coach. I am convinced that we can become the best."
Hagi, who briefly managed Romania in 2001 following the end of his playing career, starts with summer friendlies against Georgia and Wales, the second of which in Bucharest will be his first home game on 6 June.
Hagi succeeds Mircea Lucescu, who died at the age of 80 after taking ill during a training session.
Three days prior, Lucescu was on the touchline when Romania failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup after losing 1-0 to Turkey in the qualifying play-off.
During his coaching career, Hagi managed clubs such as Galatasaray, Bursaspor, FCSB, FC Viitorul Constant and Farul.
