Republic of Ireland Under-17 international Josh O'Dwyer is heading for Austria

Republic of Ireland Under-17 international Josh O'Dwyer will join Red Bull Salzburg from Shamrock Rovers in July.

He has represented his country at U15, U16 and U17 levels, with his most recent international appearance coming in the 7-0 defeat of Slovakia that saw Ireland qualify for the World Cup at U17 level.

O’Dwyer has been with Hoops academy from ten years of age having joined from Leicester Celtic.

The 16-year-old midfielder had attracted interest from a host of top clubs in the UK and in Europe.

Due to Brexit, O’Dwyer would not have been able to move to a British club for another two years.

An undisclosed fee has been agreed for the transfer, which will officially go through in the summer.

O’Dwyer is likely to feature for Salzburg’s B team in Austria’s Regionalliga West in the hope of reaching their first team.

Irish players are left with a decision on whether to stay in the League of Ireland academy or first-team system until reaching the age of 18, or opt for a move to an EU country, if they wish to transfer.

O'Dwyer has already featured for the Shamrock Rovers U20 side despite just turning 16 last month.

The Hoops have agreed a deal for Victor Ozhianvuna to join Arsenal in Janaury 2027, while Michael Noonan opted not to take up a switch to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

He is likely to transfer for a significant fee in the next transfer window.

Ozhianvuna’s planned move will net the Premier Division champions €2 million.

O'Dwyer's switch will not attract a large fee due to not being on professional terms with the Tallaght side.
