The Netherlands celebrate their first goal from debutant Renee van Asten

The Netherlands secured a 2-1 Women's World Cup qualifying victory over France when the Republic of Ireland's group rivals did battle in Breda.

Hours after the Girls in Green had seen off Poland on a 3-2 scoreline in Gdansk, the Dutch ended an 11-year winless streak against their opponents to leapfrog them and top the table.

The match began with a disallowed France goal before Renee van Asten opened the scoring on her debut.

Despite a second-half equaliser for France when the ball deflected off goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, the Dutch regained momentum.

Esmee Brugts netted the decisive goal following a clinical pass from Kaptein.

Van Domselaar redeemed herself with several acrobatic saves for the hosts, preserving the lead during a period of sustained France pressure.
