Shane Farrell injury overshadows Drogs-Bohs goalless draw

Bohemians relinquished their lead at the top of the Premier Division for the first time this season as more points were dropped in a scoreless stalemate against Drogheda United.

Colm Whelan and Mark Doyle had the most clear-cut opportunities to score for their respective sides but this draw was fair and altogether just on the basis of the 90 minute-plus battle.

The game was marred by the late collapse of Drogheda's Shane Farrell, who fell to the ground minutes after a collision with Bohs’ Senan Mullen that saw the latter substituted.

Farrell, wearing an oxegen mask, was stretchered away from the field of play after an eight-minute pause.

The 11-times League of Ireland champions arrived at Sullivan & Lambe Park with the league’s outstanding away record to date, having taken 10 points from 12 and not conceding a single goal in the process.

The teams could not be separated

More than that, their status as league leaders underlined their superiority across the board thus far - the only unbeaten team in the top flight.

Those records were under threat in the early stages as United took the game to the visitors. Bohs hardly had a sniff of an opportunity in an opening 35 minutes dominated by Drogheda.

Alan Reynolds, the Gypsies’ suspended head coach who was watching from the stands, will have been concerned but at least his team roused themselves before the interval.

Dawson Devoy’s fiercely struck shot took a slight deflection en route to clearing Luke Dennison’s crossbar.

Then from a Drogs free-kick at one end, a lightning move upfield ended in Devoy outpacing teammates and opposition defenders alike to burst into the area only for Edwin Agbaje to recover to block his shot.

In first half stoppage time, Dennison was quick off his line to deny Colm Whelan after a mistake by Agbaje left the in-form striker through on goal. A fifth goal of the season eluded him.

Before that, Drogheda had created for themselves a host of chances to take the lead. The best was in the fourth minute Bohs conceded possession deep in opposition territory.

Brandon Kavanagh found Doyle’s run in behind and just as Devoy would do half an hour later, he raced through on goal. This time, his composure deserted him and be blazed over.

Senan Mullen of Bohemians reacts after a missed opportunity

Kacper Chorazka produced a stunning save to tip Kavanagh’s free kick around the post, after Warren Davis was tripped right on the edge of the area and James Bolger headed over too when the Bohs’ stopper made a mess of claiming a Kavanagh cross.

Reynolds was joined in the stands by injured duo Dayle Rooney and Douglas James-Taylor, both formerly of the home parish.

He, and his assistants on the touchline Stephen O’Donnell and Derek Pender, could at least count Hugh Martin and Markuss Strods among their substitutes, both of whom returned from Ireland Under 17 and Latvia Under 21 duty respectively.

In the early stages of the second half, opportunities were more scarce. The game was a tighter affair, having lost the openness so evident and thrilling in the first 45 minutes.

The best opportunities did fall Drogheda’s way, though. Davis, making his first start of the campaign after a hamstring injury, controlled the ball superbly at the back post and poked it inside towards Doyle but his close-range diving header was kept out.

Then, Conor Keeley’s glancing header was kept out by Chorazka’s diving save down to his right.

Three consecutive draws - against Shelbourne, Dundalk and now Drogheda – has slowed Bohemians’ momentum and, perhaps momentarily, curbed enthusiasm about being the league’s leading lights in 2026.

As the clock ticked towards full time, there were serious concerns over the health of Farrell who collapsed off the ball minutes after going down following a collision with Mullen that required the Bohs’ youngster - on loan from Torino - needing a bandage to his bloodied head before being replaced.

A Bohs onslaught followed; Harry Vaughan’s injury time effort was palmed over by Dennison and Connor Parson’s shot was off-target to ensure a stalemate.
