Katie McCabe and Arsenal moved a step closer to defending their Women's Champions League title with a 3-2 aggregate win over Chelsea despite losing the second leg of their quarter-final 1-0.

The Blues will be left to rue missed chances at Stamford Bridge after Sjoeke Nusken’s late consolation was not enough to turn things around.

Republic of Ireland captain McCabe played all 90 minutes for the Gunners. But the Dubliner was also at the centre of a flashpoint in the fifth minute of added time after a hair-pull on Chelsea's Alyssa Thompson down the right flank.

McCabe was seen apologising to the 21-year-old in the immediate aftermath.

However, Blues manager Sonia Bompastor was sent off after protesting the decision not to penalise the Arsenal and Ireland left back.

But taking to Instagram post-match, McCabe said that she had not intended to pull Thompson's hair and had instead been trying to get a grip of the American forward's jersey to stop her in her tracks.

"I just want to clarify that I was genuinely reaching for the shirt, I wouldn't ever want to pull someone's hair. Full respect to Thompson," she wrote.

Chelsea came close to opening the scoring in the second half, but the excellent Daphne van Domselaar, who made a number of critical saves, tipped Sam Kerr's effort over.

There were two early wasted chances for Nusken, and Alyssa Thompson was also just off-target as Chelsea looked for that all-important early opener.

The Blues kept Arsenal at bay during a bright spell at the other end of the pitch, but Chelsea could not capitalise on any of their ensuing chances, including another attempt from Thompson, who could only lift the ball over the bar.

Arsenal looked more of a threat to start the second half when Kerr finally gave Van Domselaar something to do, forcing a fingertip save from the Dutch keeper with a long-range effort in the 53rd minute.

Arsenal thought they had put the tie out of reach when Stina Blackstenius nodded past Hannah Hampton, but it was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

It remained a game of near-misses for Chelsea when Veerle Buurman clipped the post from the rebound of a James effort and Van Domselaar came up with another massive stop to push Nusken’s header onto her post.

Nusken finally found the finishing touch, rifling into the roof of the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time, too late for the hosts to find a second.

The semi-final first legs will be on the week of 25-26 April with Arsenal's fixture against the winner of Lyon and Wolfsburg's quarter-final tie to be broadcast live on RTÉ.

Manchester United exited the competition following a 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich, losing 5-3 on aggregate.

Last week’s reverse fixture at Old Trafford saw Bayern claim a 3-2 win, but at the start of the second leg in Munich, Melvine Malard - scorer of two goals against Ireland last month - levelled for United.

However, a more confident second-half display saw Bayern take charge as Glodis Viggosdottir and Linda Dallmann both struck in the final 10 minutes to book the German side’s place in the semi-finals.

Malard started brightly for United, going close early on when her curling first-time effort was clawed away by Ena Mahmutovic.

The forward earned her reward in the 11th minute when a miscommunication between Mahmutovic and her defence saw them unable to clear Jadye Riviere's pass and Malard latched onto the ball, hitting a low finish.

Mahmutovic made another solid save to deny Malard and was called into action again to palm away Jess Park’s looping cross that looked destined to dip underneath the crossbar.

Bayern had an opportunity when Vanessa Gilles nodded just past the post from a corner and at the opposite end, Mahmutovic scooped up Fridolina Rolfo’s header.

The hosts started the second half well, with Pernille Harder having a low strike on the turn cleared by Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Georgia Stanway blasted an effort from outside of the area past the post.

Bayern continued to dominate as Harder had a shot blocked and Giulia Gwinn was also denied.

However, their persistence paid off in the 80th minute when Viggosdottir struck, with Tullis-Joyce was unable to keep the defender’s header out despite getting a hand to the ball.

Four minutes later Bayern’s place in the final four was sealed after Malard made a brilliant headed clearance on the goaline, but the ball reached Dallmann, who hit a first-time finish into the roof of the net.
