A night that began so brightly for all of an Irish persuasion, ended in crushing disappointment

The Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off penalty shootout defeat to Czechia on Thursday night drew record numbers to RTÉ’s coverage on television and on the RTÉ Player.

RTÉ2’s coverage was watched by an average of 1.37 million viewers – accounting for 78% of those watching television at the time – making it the most-watched programme of the year so far in Ireland.

The average audience is calculated based on the average number of viewers that were tuned in across the duration of the show.

Viewing peaked at 1.6 million at 10.34 pm, just as Czechia sealed victory in Prague with the winning penalty.

The match attracted 1,059,000 streams on the RTÉ Player, the highest number of streams for any single event in the platform's history.

RTÉ Radio 1 also saw a significant lift in its digital listenership. The key 8-10pm window was up 120% compared to the previous day. The period after 10 pm also saw massive increases, with gains of 268% over the previous day.
