Joanna Byrne removed as Drogheda United co-chairperson

Drogheda United owners the Trivela Group has removed Joanna Byrne from her role with the club as co-chairperson.

Last month, Byrne claimed the club's board of directors said her position was untenable, following her statement around the Republic of Ireland v Israel fixture in the UEFA Nations League.

Byrne, a sitting Sinn Féin TD for Louth, had said she will not be stepping down from her voluntary position with the Boynesiders and wanted to continue in the role.

However, Trivela Group issued a statement to say Byrne has been removed from her role.

"Trivela Group can confirm that, pursuant to its authority as sole shareholder of Drogheda United FC, Joanna Byrne has been removed by Trivela Group as a director of the club," a statement read.

"At this time, the board of directors consists of Benjamin Boycott, Marc Koretzky, Barton Lee, and club CEO Rian Wogan. Mr Boycott for the time being, will serve as the sole chairperson, and the club will look to appoint a local director and co-chair in due course.

"Once again, we thank Ms Byrne for her longstanding and ongoing dedication to the club and its success."

The American-based owners of the club previously said they were parting ways with Byrne due to a "breakdown in the trust and confidence" and not on political views or beliefs.

Byrne issued a statement this afternoon, saying the notion of a conflict of interest only became an issue recently.

She added that she disputes any conflict between being a TD and a co-chairperson of a League of Ireland club.

Deputy Byrne said: "The past few weeks have been a difficult time for me personally, but I have carried myself with integrity at all times in recent weeks, for the good of the club.

This approach is the opposite to the cold, underhand move by Trivela, initiated in the dark of the night, which was planned and co-ordinated without any consultation with me. This is symptomatic of the way they do business.

A narrative has been peddled in recent weeks of a conflict of interest between my role as co-chair and my role as an opposition spokesperson on sport, something I categorically dispute.

"I have consciously kept my politics and Drogs hat separate for many years, something which wasn't easy to do but something I managed successfully.

"The facts also are that I was a sitting councillor when Trivela took over Drogheda United and subsequently stood in two elections since, another local election and then a general election. Neither of these were ever an issue with Trivela and they were consulted prior to both, and they were supportive at the time.

"At the time Trivela took ownership of the club, the issue of a potential conflict was discussed with them and no issue was raised."

Trivela did state it conducted a review recently into the matter and it "concluded that this is not a workable arrangement and should have been addressed previously".

Byrne said she was not asked to partake in that review, despite being a board member, director and co-chairperson of the club as well as working in politics.

She concluded by saying she remains deeply committed to Drogheda United and want to see the club flourish, as well as the League of Ireland.
