In-form David McGoldrick would 'reconsider' Republic of Ireland retirement

Former Republic of Ireland international David McGoldrick has opened the door to a potential recall ahead of the crucial World Cup play-off semi-final against Czechia.

The Barnsley striker had retired from international duty in November 2020 after 14 caps and one goal for the Boys in Green.

But the 38-year-old has enjoyed an excellent run of form in English League One of late, scoring eight goals in his last ten league games for a Barnsley side managed by his ex-Ireland team-mate Conor Hourihane.

That form has been rewarded with the EFL League One Player of the Month for February.

But it has also fueled speculation about a sensational recall to the Ireland squad amid an injury crisis among the strikers ahead of the 26 March play-off match in Prague.

AS Roma loanee Evan Ferguson has ruled out after ankle surgery, Swansea's Adam Idah is yet to return from injury and there has been a lack of recent game-time for Sheffield United winger Chiedozie Ogbene.

On Friday, McGoldrick did not rule out coming to Ireland's aid if called upon by Heimir Hallgrimsson, who will name his squad for the Czech game next Thursday.

But the veteran forward indicated that he has not been contacted about a potential call-up as of yet.

"I've heard a lot about it," he told Sky Sports of the speculation.

"I've had a lot of messages. I looked at my Instagram the other day and I've got Ireland flags everywhere saying 'come home unc'.

"I would reconsider (retirement). I don't know what's happening. I know there's lots of injuries, and I don't know. I haven't heard anything.

"I don't really want to go too deep in it. I've been watching as a fan ever since I retired from 2020 I think it was.

"I'm here, I'm scoring goals. I'm just concentrating on scoring for Barnsley at the minute and what will be will be."
