Minister Patrick O'Donovan meets with FAI and LOI over Dundalk trouble

Fire stewards remove flares from the pitch before the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division match between Dundalk and Drogheda United at Oriel Park in Dundalk, Louth.
The fallout from last week's Louth derby continues

Officials from the Football Association of Ireland and League of Ireland have held a meeting with the Minister for Sport Patrick O'Donovan this morning, following the incidents at last week's Louth derby between Dundalk and Drogheda.

There was trouble before the game with fans clashing outside Clarke train station on the Carrick Road, while after the game, gardaí arrested a man in his 20s after responding to a report of a public order incident on Carrickmacross Road.

Inside the stadium, several flares were thrown by the Drogheda fans onto the newly relaid artificial surface, causing multiple burn marks and significant damage to the pitch.

A 12-year-old child was also struck by a flare and sustained burns to his face.

It’s understood that at today's meeting the Minister was assured that both the FAI and League of Ireland would take specific action as early as tomorrow, having heard his concerns about the safety of patrons and protection of the State’s investment in facilities.

There is also an expectation in government that there will be disclosures to gardaí and full co-operation from the league and FAI to identify those involved in last Friday’s disturbances at Oriel Park.

Meanwhile the Taoiseach believes well run LOI clubs should not be punished in the wake of Friday's disturbances.

Speaking at Government Buildings Micheál Martin said that he expects funding to be restored to clubs following today's discussions between Minister O'Donovan and the FAI.
