We had to wait to see Shamrock Rovers begin their SSE Airtricity League defence, but for followers of the green and white it was worth the wait as they prepare to host Dundalk on Monday.

They upped the ante in the second half to see off St Patrick's Athletic at Tallaght Stadium on Friday, with teenagers Michael Noonan and Adam Brennan getting the goals.

It's scary how talented the duo are at that age, with Noonan the subject of much speculation that he won't be playing with the Hoops for much longer owing to interest from abroad.

Brennan, meanwhile, was signed from UCD in the off season but the former Student looked like the master of all before him in west Dublin, getting forward plenty but also doing his duty at the back. The goal was a just reward for his performance.

Over the weekend, another College player made the move from Belfield to Tallaght, although Luke O'Regan has been loaned back to UCD.

In team news, the Hoops will assess Enda Stevens and John McGovern before kick off, with both having reportedly picked up a bug.

What kept the title race interesting over the last few seasons was the slow start of Rovers, but if Friday is anything to go by, there'll be no such head start granted to any of the chasing pack this season.

Game two - let's not get ahead of ourselves!

This game with Dundalk was supposed to be the season opener but bad weather saw it postponed, the first of two games involving the defending champions to fall foul of the recent biblical rain.

The Lilywhites, First Division champions last season, have signed well in the off-season.

In their two games so far they've held leads late on but been unable to hold on. Whether their glass is half full or half empty depends on your own perspective.

Derry City and Drogheda United are no slouches though, and to go toe-to-toe with them gives off good vibes for Ciarán Kilduff's project at Oriel Park.

"Maybe people were looking at them on paper rather than watching Dundalk play," Rovers manager Stephen Bradley said of the Louth club's start.

"When you watch them, as we did in pre-season and in their first two league games, it was quite clear to see what Dundalk are about. They've been really dangerous in their games, cause real problems and are a good team. I’ve no doubt they will come to Tallaght and try and show that."

Dundalk have held their own in their two games so far

Former Bohs players Keith Buckley and Rob Cornwall would love nothing more than to upset the apple cart on their return to the capital.

Norwich City-bound Vinnie Leonard will be departing the League of Ireland in the summer, but he'll potentially get the chance this evening to try to stifle the sharpest attack this country has to offer.

Similarly skipper Daryl Horgan, with 17 Irish caps in his back pocket, can show everyone what he's still capable of in the league's best stadium.

Dundalk would be delighted to have maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign by 10pm but it's a massive ask.

"We were gutted on Friday night, very disappointed," manager Kilduff said of letting Drogheda snatch a late point.

"We had an opportunity to kill the game off, but we were dominant for large periods and there were huge positives to take. There were a lot of really strong performances.

"The Premier Division is relentless, and it's going to be a huge challenge to go to Tallaght Stadium. We’ve made a very good account of ourselves in our first two games and you can see the pride in this group and around the club as we make the most of our return to the Premier Division.

"I believe we can compete with anybody in this league. We’re unbeaten so far, but Shamrock Rovers will be another huge test."
