Megan Connolly returns for Ireland

Megan Connolly is back in the Republic of Ireland squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers against France and the Netherlands, while Heather Payne misses out despite returning to action with Leicester City last Friday.

Connolly, the versatile Lazio player, missed November's friendly against Hungary in Marbella with a foot injury but returns to add depth to Carla Ward's midfield options.

Payne came off the bench an hour into Leicester's 6-0 loss to Manchester City four days ago after a spell on the sidelines with an achilles problem. She has not made the cut, with Ward trusting the likes of Aoife Mannion, Chloe Mustaki, Abbie Larkin and Marissa Sheva to occupy the wide areas.

Amber Barrett is also included. The Donegal native, who moved from Standard Liege to Strasbourg in January, missed the defeat of the Hungarians as she recovered from a knock. West Ham's Jess Ziu also missed the trip to Spain; she has been overlooked this window.

The Girls in Green begin their World Cup qualificaton campaign against France (ranked seventh in the world) at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday 3 March, before travelling to Utrecht take on the Netherlands (11th in the world) the following Saturday.

In April, they'll have a double-header against Poland, three places higher in the rakings than Ireland who are currently 27th.

Ireland's excellent Nations League play-off win against Belgium last October earned them promotion to League A as on of the top 16 ranked countries in Europe.

It's a tough challenge, but there are perks to being among the big guns. The winners of the group qualify directly for the 2027 tournament in Brazil, with the rest guaranteed a place in the play-offs.

After the draw was made back in November, Ward said they would target third place as "a minimum". That would mean Ireland potentially get a kinder draw in the play-offs, while also ensuring they stay in League A for the next Nations League.
