The Showgrounds is the venue as Sligo Rovers host Bohemians, with John Russell's side looking to bounce back after their opening day defeat late on to Derry City, while Bohemians travel west after their stalemate against St Pat's at the Aviva Stadium.

Early doors obviously in the campaign but Sligo can take much heart from their efforts at the Ryan McBride Brandywell. Their play out wide caused the Candystripes some problems in the opening half and that's where they found the route to goal, with new signings Alex Nolan and Jeannot Esua combining to tee up Jad Hakiki for the opener.

Derry were somewhat off colour but with James McClean back at his boyhood club, they eventually found their groove and started to create chances. However, Sam Sargent in the Sligo goal proved to be an immovable force, making many fine saves.

In the second half, it was one-way traffic, Derry pressing for a leveller while Sligo stood defiant, in spite of the absence of an out ball.

Sargent, still inspired between the posts but his colleagues out the field were starting to tire. The pressure eventually told; superb finishes from Alex Bannon and Josh Thomas had the Brandywell rocking.

In Dublin 4 on Sunday last, Bohemians and St Pat's played out a game that will not live long in the memory. If any team deserved to win it, it was Bohemians.

Joseph Anang proved to be the saviour for Pat's with a string of top stops to frustrate the Phibsboro outfit.

Twice denying Connor Parsons and Ross Tierney was the pick of Anang's highlights reel.

Bohs boss Alan Reynolds started five of his nine close season signings, though he chose to play without a recognised centre-forward as Patrick Hickey, an option there, played in central defence. A surprise to most watching on.

John Russell was greatly encouraged by last week's performance and has called on his players to keep momentum going for the opening match in Sligo.

He told: sligorovers.com: "We were annoyed not to come away with at least a point from Derry. But analysing it, we have plenty to be enthused by. We were the better team in the first half.

"Second half, we had to switch things around and lost a few players with injury and cramp. We were well organised until they scored their first and couldn't hold out. But there were some really encouraging signs and some very notable individual performances, especially from our new players.

"We're only 90 minutes into the season so it will take a little time to further build connections. It's the same for everyone, regardless. "We're in a good place and in an excellent frame of mind going into Saturday. The players are raring now and we're looking to bring that energy, particularly from the first hour of last week's game into this one."

In Bit O' Red team news, it is hoped that Mai Traore will be available for his debut this evening. The Guinean striker missed the trip to Derry due to an administration issue, with the club working to resolve this as quickly as possible.

Midfielder Carl McHugh faces a late fitness test, while defender Conor Reynolds looks set to miss out with a knock.

Goalkeeper Liam Hughes returns having recovered from a shoulder injury.

Last season Bohemians defeated Sligo 1-0 and then drew 0-0 at The Showgrounds, with that victory and the three points proving crucial in what was a successful quest for European football.

Alan Reynolds (above) heads to the Yeats County again with some regrets his side did not grab the three points on offer at Lansdowne Road.

"We shaded possession but there wasn't much goalmouth action there for both sets of fans to get excited about," he told RTÉ Sport.

"We had two really, really good chances, another half chance, I'm not sure if they had any chances.

"Was it the best game? Probably not, but still disappointed we didn't come out winners with the chances."

Looking ahead to this evening's encounter, Reynolds said: "Sligo are a really well organised team. They were very unlucky to come away from the Brandywell empty handed. They held their own for the majority of the game, Derry found it really hard to find a way through them and it took two moments of magic to turn the game around.

"We are focused on our own game though. We know how we want to play and what we need to improve on."

Bohs have a full squad to choose from, with Hugh Martin returning from international duty on Friday.
