Evan Ferguson made his return from injury for Roma as the Italian giants beat Stuttgart 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Republic of Ireland striker had sat out the Giallorossi's last two matches - both against Torino - in Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

That had followed a painful knock to his lower back in a 2-0 win over Sassuolo earlier this month.

However, the 21-year-old, who is loan from Premier League side Brighton, was named in Gian Piero Gasperini's starting XI for Roma's penultimate league phase game in the Europa League.

The Meathman played all 90 minutes as the Serie A side sealed victory courtesy of a brace from Italian midfielder Niccolo Pisilli.

Ferguson was involved in the second goal in stoppage time, with his pull back in the right corner finding Devyne Rensch, who in turn fed Pablo Dybala for the assist to Pisilli.

Roma and Ferguson will be next in action at home to AC Milan on Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico.

Robbie Keane's Ferencvaros drew 1-1 with Rafa Benitez's Panathinaikos in Budapest.

The result against Keane's former Liverpool manager leaves the ex-Republic of Ireland captain's side seventh in the table and the Hungarians remain in the hunt for direct qualification for the last 16.

Jaden Sancho scored the winner for Aston Villa

Meanwhile, Aston Villa guaranteed themselves a top-eight finish in the competition after Jadon Sancho's first-half header secured a 1-0 victory over Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Villa’s impressive European record went to new heights as they earned a sixth win from their seven matches this season and brought Fenerbahce’s unbeaten record at home to an end in the process.

Sancho opened his account in Villa colours to put the visitors in the driving seat in front of a loud Sukru Saracoglu atmosphere.

The Premier League side had to deal with several injury issues this week and their mettle was more than tested in the second period as goalkeeper Marco Bizot stepped up in the absence of Emi Martinez to make eight saves to keep their lead safe.

Morgan Rogers saw his goal scrubbed out for offside but they had a reprieve themselves when Kemer Akturkoglu thought he equalised, only for VAR to intervene for a second time.

Villa’s home match with RB Salzburg next week will be nothing more than a formality, knowing their place inside the round of 16 is safe.

Ryan Yates scored the own goal that condemned Nottingham Forest to a costly defeat

But Nottingham Forest's hopes of earning automatic qualification to the knockout rounds are all-but over after a disastrous 1-0 defeat at Braga.

Forest were sunk by skipper Ryan Yates’ second-half own goal, which came less than a minute after Morgan Gibbs-White missed a penalty.

The defeat leaves Forest almost certain to go into the play-off round and face two extra fixtures in the thick of an already packed schedule.

They are on 11 points – three adrift of the top eight – but they would need seven teams above them to either lose or drop points.

A miserable night ended in a straight red card for Elliot Anderson in injury time after he appeared to say something to referee Igor Pajac.

It worsens the mood surrounding the club, with disgruntled fans making their feelings clear in a sodden Portugal as the pressure builds on manager Sean Dyche.

Mohamed Diomande's first-half strike gave Rangers their first Europa League win of the season as they beat Ludogorets 1-0 at Ibrox.

Danny Rohl has rejuvenated the Gers on the domestic scene since taking over from Russell Martin in October but they went into the penultimate league phase fixture with just one point from 18 and effectively out of the competition.

However, on a wet and windy Govan night, midfielder Diomande put the home side into the lead in the 33rd minute and it proved to be decisive in a mostly controlled performance.

Rangers face Porto in their final Europa League fixture in Portugal next week but first resume their William Hill Premiership title push at home to Dundee on Sunday.

The Light Blues are behind second-placed Celtic on goal difference and six points adrift of leaders Hearts, who host the Hoops on Sunday.

Ten-man Celtic drew 2-2 in their Europa League trip to Bologna earlier on Thursday.
