Republic of Ireland international Evan Ferguson suffered a "severe bruise" to his lower back in Roma's 2-0 Serie A win over Sassuolo, but early indications are he has avoided a longer-term setback.

The Meathman started his fifth successive league game, but was forced off in the 39th minute at Stadio Olimpico after going down with back pain following a couple of earlier challenges.

Manu Kone and Matias Soule struck in the last 15 minutes as Roma climbed into third place in Serie A.

After the game, Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini said that while a scan will reveal more on Sunday, he isn’t overly concerned that Ferguson will be sidelines for a lengthy period of time.

"He took a knock, a serious bruise, we’ll see tomorrow," he said.

"He was unlucky. They are painful blows that semi-paralyse you and prevent you from playing. He took more than one. I feel sorry for him.

"We'll see tomorrow but I don’t think it’s a muscular thing that will take days."

It's another concern for Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson ahead of March's World Cup play-off semi-final against Czech Republic with Adam Idah recently ruled out for a "significant" spell after picking up an injury in Swansea training just before Christmas.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Como stay sixth after being held 1-1 at home by Bologna, with Atalanta closing in them with a 2-0 victory over Torino.

Bottom-placed Pisa picked up a point in a 2-2 draw at Udinese, but Alberto Gilardino's side have gone nine games without a win.

In Germany, fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shock 4-1 home defeat as Stuttgart moved level with them in the Bundesliga.

Igor Matanovic's late winner gave Freiburg a 2-1 comeback victory over 10-man Hamburg, while Union Berlin and Mainz and Heidenheim and Cologne shared 2-2 draws.

In La Liga, Villarreal cut the gap to leaders Barcelona to eight points by beating Alaves 3-1 as Alberto Moleiro, Gerard Moreno and Georges Mikautadze netted in the second half.

There were 1-1 draws between Valencia and Elche and Real Oviedo and Real Betis, while Girona beat Osasuna 1-0.

Gary O'Neil succeeded Liam Rosenior as Strasbourg boss this week and began his reign with a 6-0 French Cup thrashing of fourth-tier Avranches.

Fellow Ligue 1 teams Monaco and Lorient also made the last 16 as Toulouse overcame Angers on penalties.
