Tanzania grabbed a second-half equaliser to hold Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in their last Group C encounter at the ‍Africa Cup of Nations and book themselves a place in the last 16.

It was only Tanzania's second point of the tournament but proved enough for them to advance as one of the four best third-placed finishers.

A piece of history then as is also the first time that Tanzania, who will co-host the 2027 Cup of Nations finals with neighbours Kenya and ‍Uganda, have gone beyond the group stage although they are still to win a game at the finals with a record of five draws and seven defeats in 12 matches.

Feisal Salum's powerful shot three minutes into the second half was enough ‍to secure the draw after Tunisia, who advance in second spot, had been ‍ahead with a 43rd-minute penalty converted by Ismael Gharbi.

Tunisia will now meet Mali in Casablanca on Saturday, while Tanzania face hosts Morocco in the first knockout round in Rabat on Sunday.

Raphael Onyedika scored twice and Paul Onuachu netted his first international goal in four years as Nigeria beat 10-man Uganda 3-1 in Fes to record a third win in Group C and send the East African side home.

It was a dominant performance from Nigeria despite resting several regulars having already been assured of top spot in the group.

Uganda netted a consolation through Rogers Mato and used three goalkeepers in the game following an injury and a red card for Salim Magoola, another calamity in a chaotic tournament for coach Paul Put's side.

Nigeria have impressed in the group stage having been losing finalists two years ago, and following the shock of missing out on 2026 World Cup qualification.

After Onuachu had missed a simple chance midway through the first half, he found the back of the net after 28 minutes.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru showed quick feet on the left and his pass into Onuachu was perfect for the big forward to finish. The goal was the striker's first for Nigeria since 2021.

Uganda were ‍reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when substitute goalkeeper Magoola used his hands some 10 yards outside his area to stop a Victor Osimhen shot.

Skipper Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off as Senegal secured top spot in Group D with a 3-0 victory over Benin in Tangier.

The Lions of Teranga went ahead seven minutes before the break when defender Abdoulaye Seck converted Krepin Diatta's free-kick, although he had to await the outcome of a lengthy VAR check for handball before he was able to celebrate.

Sadio Mane’s trickery handed Habib Diallo a second goal on a plate with 62 minutes gone, but their side was dealt a major blow nine minutes later when Koulibaly was dismissed for a foul on Aiyegun Tosin after Rwandan referee Samuel Uwikunda was advised to go to the pitchside screen.

Senegal, who had already booked their place in the last 16, made sure deep into injury time when Cherif Ndiaye scored from the penalty spot with Benin claiming one of the four spots for the best third-placed teams.

Gael Kakuta scored twice as DR Congo eased through to the last 16 with a 3-0 win over Botswana in Rabat.

The Leopards started in positive mood with Kakuta and Charles Pickel both going close inside the opening seven minutes, and Botswana keeper Goitseone Phoko had to save from Meschack Elia as the pressure mounted.

Nathanael Mbuku also threatened as DR Congo continued to dominate, and it was he who broke the deadlock when he accepted Kakuta's pass to fire home left-footed with 31 minutes gone before Kakuta struck from the penalty spot with four minutes of the first half remaining after Thabo Leinanyane had handled.

Kakuta helped himself to a second on the hour and Fiston Mayele saw a fourth goal ruled out for handball, and they could not add to their tally as time ran down as they finished second in Group D.
