Evan Ferguson turned in a man of the match display as Roma claimed a 3-1 victory over Genoa which moved the Giallorossi into the Serie A Champions League places.

The Republic of Ireland international scored a goal and claimed an assist with a battling performance up front when he lead the line as Roma legend Daniele De Rossi brought his Genoa side to the Stadio Olimpico.

Ferguson has been under pressure of late with manager Gian Piero Gasperini calling on him to deliver more for the club and he responded in style, have been paired with Paulo Dybala up front.

Roma started with real purpose and raced into a 13th minute lead as Matias Soule capitalised on a mistake at the back by Genoa's Johan Vasquez and fired home from inside the penalty area.

A few minutes after that Ferguson had his first effort on goal when he collected a through ball from Gianluca Mancini before getting a shot away only to see it deflected wide.

Ferguson was at the heart of everything Roma were doing up front and on 18 minutes set up Manu Kone to double his side's lead.

The game was over as a contest just after the half-hour mark when Ferguson showed real tenacity to follow is Soule's shot which was initially saved before the on-loan striker poked it home from close range.

Ferguson continued to impress in the second-half before he was withdrawn with five minutes to go and managed to claim a late consolation goal, with Jeff Ekhator forcing it home from a goalmouth scramble.

Speaking while collecting his man of the match award, Ferguson was asked if he was pleased with his current form.

"Head down, work hard, and when I get the chance to play, show up," he replied. "It's a completely different kind of football. It was a big step forward for me, and I wanted to try it. I'm getting more and more comfortable."
