Waterford have added a second major signing in as many days, with defender John Mahon moving to the RSC from Sligo Rovers.

The 26-year-old was a free agent after falling out of favour with the Bit O' Red in the latter part of the 2025 campaign.

The addition is hot on the heels of the Blues capturing Evan McLaughlin for an undisclosed fee from Cork City on St Stephen Day.

Mahon had a decade of service with Sligo and also moved to Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone in January 2022 in a €100,000 transfer.

He returned back to The Showgrounds ahead of the 2023 League of Ireland season, where he made 28 appearances in all competitions.

A ruptured Achilles tendon sidelined for most of 2024, and while he was captain of the Bit O’ Red last season, he lost his place midway through the year.

Mahon said: "I’m delighted to be here, it felt like the right time for a fresh start and after talking to Jon and seeing the training ground I knew this was the right place for me.

"I’m looking forward to meeting the lads and getting straight to work now."

Jon Daly feels Mahon can be a leader in Waterford’s side.

The Blues boss explained: "John is a top professional and a very reliable defender. He understands what it takes to compete in this league week in, week out, and he’ll add real strength and organisation to our back line.

"I was keen to bring in someone with John’s experience and character. He’s a competitor, he sets standards, and he’ll be a big presence in the dressing room as well as on the pitch."
