Republic of Ireland international Matt Doherty has told his Wolves teammates they will be "remembered as cowards" unless they embrace their seemingly doomed battle to beat the drop in the Premier League.

Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved a penalty as Keith Andrews' Brentford piled more misery on Wolves with a 2-0 triumph at Molineux on Saturday.

Wolves equalled the lowest Christmas points tally in Premier League history after falling to a 10th straight loss, and the mood is miserable.

Afterwards, Doherty gave a brutally honest assessment of their predicament.

"We're obviously really hurt, but we need to act," he said. "It's easy to say all these things, but we need to show more on the pitch. There's not much to say other than it's not good enough.

"This is the worst I've felt in a long time. You can see the stadium is nearly empty at the end. It's not full at the start. We are just lacking the belief that we can win the game. We're scared to win the game almost. We're nervous about going ahead in the game and trying to hold on.

"We have to somehow find something. We have had a better two weeks in training; the energy and intensity have been good. But when you're playing at home in a situation like this, you have to show character. That's where you have to show your character, come out and want the ball and be brave.

"We're in every game almost until about an hour, and then we concede a goal. Then we never look like getting back in it. I don't know, we will have to watch it back, but it feels as though we're having to watch the same game back every week."

"We need something, whether that is in the loan market or whatever."

Wolves face Liverpool at Anfield and then Manchester United at Old Trafford before hosting West Ham.

They desperately need a lifeline, with Doherty suggesting they could get a lift in the transfer market.

"It has to be (a good transfer window)," he added.

"We need something, whether that is in the loan market or whatever. We are going to need some fresh energy. I'm not going to say which positions, but we need something.

"We need to find the confidence. We need to do some soul-searching, have a look in the mirror and figure out what we want to be remembered for at the club.

"Do we want to be remembered for fighting until the end of the season, or do we want to be remembered for being cowards and taking maybe the easy option out and maybe trying to leave in January or letting other people take your position?"
