Wexford FC have appointed former Republic of Ireland Women's Under-19 head coach Dave Connell as their new first-team manager.

The 64-year-old succeeds Sean Byrne who guided Wexford to glory in the Avenir Sports All-Island Cup last season as well as fourth place in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division.

Connell previously managed Limerick and Galway United men's teams earlier in his coaching career.

In 2011, he took charge of the Ireland women's under-19s, leading them to the semi-finals in 2014.

"I am very excited about taking up my position as manager of the Wexford FC Women's team for the upcoming season," Connell said.

I am very grateful and honoured to be given this opportunity to contribute to what has been created at this wonderful football club."
