Shamrock Rovers have confirmed the appointment of former Peamount United boss James O'Callaghan as their new women's senior manager.

O'Callaghan enjoyed success during his eight-year stint as Peas head coach, leading the Dublin club to three SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division titles including the double in 2020, before stepping down at the end of the 2024 season.

Former Republic of Ireland international Stephanie Zambra had been in interim charge of Shamrock Rovers in the latter part of the season just gone after former head coach Collie O'Neill resigned in July.

The Hoops ended up finishing fifth in the league table, 18 points behind champions Athlone Town who also beat them in the FAI Cup semi-finals.

Speaking after his appointment as Shamrock Rovers boss on Wednesday, O'Callaghan said his focus would be on instilling a "winning culture" at Tallaght Stadium.

"It was a great experience being involved with Peamount United over those years," he said.

"We had a lot of success and we also had a lot of learning curves along the way. What's really important in trying to replicate that again here now at Shamrock Rovers is to try to get a winning culture. That culture is defined by the players' values, they create that identity in the team."

He added: "I'm delighted to be here at Rovers. I've had a year out of management so I'm itching to get back in. I've always been a fan of the club. I used to sell programmes in Glenmalure Park. I go up to watch the men's games as I live in Tallaght. So it is really exciting now to be managing at Shamrock Rovers.

"It was nice to see the opening dates for the League of Ireland fixtures in March confirmed this week. This is a busy period between now and then because player retention and player recruitment is really, really important."
