Republic of Ireland striker Evan Ferguson got a start for Roma after injury but couldn't stop Napoli moving level with AC Milan at the top of Serie A after David Neres' first-half strike proved enough to sink them at the Stadio Olimpico.

Neres started and finished a 36th-minute counter-attack to grab the only goal of the game. Ferguson was subbed in the 46th minute making way for Tommaso Baldanzi who nearly managed a stoppage-time goal but Vanja Milinokovic-Savic made a brilliant save to deny the home side an equaliser.

Kylian Mbappe came to Real Madrid's rescue as his second-half penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw at lowly Girona in LaLiga.

Azzedine Ounahi had stunned the visitors by opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time, and Mbappe’s goal will do little to ease the mounting pressure on Real boss Xabi Alonso after a third straight draw.

Alberto Moleiro scored twice including a stoppage-time winner as Villarreal claimed their fifth league win in a row with a 3-2 triumph at Real Sociedad.

Second-half goals from Pablo Fornals and Sergi Altimora gave Real Betis a 2-0 win at neighbours Sevilla, while Kike Garcia scored a late winner as Espanyol win 1-0 at Celta Vigo.

Ajax’s Eredivisie match against Groningen at the Johan Cruyff Arena was called off after supporters ignited fireworks and flares behind one of the goals.

Referee Bas Nijhuis led the players off the pitch five minutes after kick-off, and when an attempt to restart the match was met with similar scenes, the game was formally abandoned.

Inter Milan bounced back from two successive defeats as a second-half double from Lautaro Martinez clinched a 2-0 win at lowly Pisa.

Atalanta snapped an eight-game winless streak in the league with goals from Odilon Kossounou and Ademola Lookman confirming a 2-0 home win over still-winless Fiorentina.

Early goals from Lassana Coulibaly and Lameck Banda proved enough for Lecce to earn a 2-1 win over Torino, who replied though Che Adams.

Florian Thauvin’s double proved enough to take Lens to the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-1 win at Angers.

Thauvin scored in the 45th and 74th minutes to seal a fourth straight win in a row before Djbirin Harouna’s effort gave the home side hope.

Lille shrugged off the 55th minute dismissal of Ayyoub Bouaddi to win 1-0 at Le Havre thanks to Hamza Igamane’s late strike, while Hugo Magnetti also scored a late winner as Brest came from behind to win 2-1 at Strasbourg.

Two goals from Sambou Soumano helped Lorient end a run of seven without a win as they eased past struggling Nice 3-1, while Martin Satriano scored twice in Lyon’s 3-0 win over Nantes, who had Junior Mwanga sent off just before half-time.

In the Bundesliga, Michy Batshuayi’s stoppage-time penalty snared a point for Eintracht Frankfurt in a 1-1 draw with visitors Wolfsburg.

Fabio Vieira also scored in stoppage time as Hamburg beat Stuttgart 2-1, while Freiburg roared to a 4-0 win over bottom club Mainz, who had Paul Nebel sent off before the break.
