Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati has been ruled out of Spain’s Nations League final second leg at home to Germany after breaking her leg in training.
The Barcelona midfielder fell awkwardly during a session on Sunday and tests have revealed a fractured fibula.
"Aitana Bonmati finished the morning session at the Ciudad del Futbol in Las Rozas in pain after a bad landing in an accidental action," said a Spanish Football Federation statement.
"Following tests carried out by the medical services of the Royal Spanish Football Federation on Sunday, 30 November, she has been diagnosed with a fracture in her left fibula.
"The player will return to Barcelona and rejoin her club to begin her recovery period."
Holders Spain host Germany on Tuesday after the first game finished goalless.
Bonmati was on the losing side of the women's Euros final in July and played the full 90 minutes despite being discharged from hospital days before the tournament began after suffering from a bout of viral meningitis.
She was also awarded player of the tournament but missed her penalty in the shootout against England that saw them retain their European title.
