Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of Cameroonian defender Jeannot Esua on a two-year deal.

The attacking wing-back has spent the last two seasons with Galway United after a well travelled career.

After leaving his native Cameroon, Esua signed with Californian side Orange County before moving across the border to join Canadian side Edmonton FC.

Three years in Canada saw him attract European attention and pitched up in Finland in 2022, firstly for Lappeenranta and later Ekenas.

Galway United made their move for the right-sided player before the start of the 2024 campaign, the Tribesmen's first back in the Premier Division, and featured in more than 60 games for the club.

Esua says having spoken to Sligo manager John Russell, he was certain where his future lies.

"I had offers but I didn't want to join any club just for the sake of it," Esua said.

"I wanted to join a club where I could have a lot of belief in the project and that was here at Rovers. I've spoken to John on several occasions throughout the last few years, even before I joined Galway and now I feel it is the time I want to join a club like Rovers.

"There's big ambition here and there's a lot of excitement around the place."
