Shelbourne have been handed a boost on the eve of their UEFA Conference League clash with AZ Alkmaar after winger Daniel Kelly signed a new contract with the club.

Kelly joined from Derry City a year ago and made 19 League of Ireland appearances, scoring three goals, while also featuring in nine European fixtures.

Injuries disrupted some of his season, but Joey O'Brien has opted to extend the Ringsend native's deal.

Kelly said: "I'm delighted to be signing back for Shelbourne Football Club. It has been a pleasure working under the staff and alongside my teammates over the past year and I’m really looking forward to continuing that work. I have a real hunger to bring silverware back to Tolka Park next year.

O’Brien said Kelly is a proven asset within the league: "We are delighted to get Dan signed for the coming season. After coming back from injury, he has made a great impact on the squad. He has contributed vital goals and assists this year, and we believe there is more of that to come.

"Dan is a player who knows this league and has operated at the top end of the table. He knows what it takes to win, and we’re delighted he’s with us for next season."

The Reds take on the Dutch side tomorrow night needing points on the board to avoid exiting the Conference League.

O'Brien led the side to third place in the Premier Division this year.

Elsewhere Galway United have signed defender Wasiri Williams from Latvian club Daugavpils.

Williams played in Ireland in 2023 with Dundalk while on loan from Swansea City.

He went onto sign for Partick Thistle in Scotland after the conclusion of his loan spells where he made 16 appearances for the club during the 2023-24 season, before moving to Latvia.

Williams said: "I'm delighted to have signed. It’s nice to be back in the league. I’m looking forward to getting started. I look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming games."

The new addition is much-needed for Galway after seeing a host of players depart in the off-season including Patrick Hickey, Bobby Burns, Jeannot Esua, Brendan Clarke and Vincent Borden.
