Evan Ferguson came off the bench to end his almost 13-month goal drought at club level and send Roma top of the Serie A standings with a 3-1 win at Cremonese.

In an action-packed first half, which included a Roma goal ruled out for offside and a Cremonese penalty overturned, the visitors took the lead through Matias Soule's shot from the edge of the area in the 17th minute.

Republic of Ireland striker Ferguson was introduced on the hour mark, and four minutes later the 21-year-old netted his first goal for Roma in what was his 11th appearance for the club.

Wesley Franca wrapped up the win five minutes later, with Francesco Folino heading in a stoppage-time consolation goal for the hosts.

Ferguson is the first Irishman to score in the Italian top-flight since Liam Brady, who played for Juventus, Sampdoria, Inter Milan and Ascoli between 1980 and 1987.

Roma are now on 27 points, two ahead of holders Napoli, who beat Atalanta 3-1 on Saturday, with Inter third on 24 points ahead of their clash with AC Milan later this evening. Cremonese are 12th in the standings on 14 points.

Ferguson's red-hot international team-mate Troy Parrott had earlier goaled for his club, AZ Alkmaar, in their 3-1 defeat at Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie.
