World Cup pushes Premier League start back for next season

The dates have been confirmed for the 2026-27 Premier League season, which will kick off on 22 August next year.

This means a start of a week later after the end of the World Cup, the final of which is due to take place in New Jersey on 19 July.

The Premier League season will run until 30 May 2027, with the last round of fixtures taking place a week before the Champions League final.

The changes mean that there will be an 89-day gap between the last round of fixtures this season, on 24 May, and the start of next season.

The campaign will comprise 33 weekend and five midweek rounds.

"With an increasingly congested global football calendar, player welfare remains a priority for the Premier League," the league said in a statement.

"Over the Christmas and New Year period, no two match rounds will take place within 60 hours. This is in keeping with commitments made to clubs to address the congested Christmas and New Year schedule within the expanded international calendar."

However, a fuller St Stephen's Day fixtures schedule is set to return for the 2026/27 season.

This season will see just one game being played on December 26, with Manchester United hosting Newcastle.

This is the fewest number of top flight games on that date in 43 years and it comes about as a result of European competitions and contractual broadcasting requirements.
