The Premier League has agreed to move matches involving Arsenal and Crystal Palace to accommodate the scheduling of a Carabao Cup tie between the teams.

The sides are due to meet in the cup at 8pm on 23 December but were both scheduled to play Premier League games on 21 December.

Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta said last week he wanted the Premier League to move his side's top-flight match against Everton after the Carabao Cup tie date was confirmed.

Following a club request, the league has now brought that match forward from 2pm on 21 December to 8pm on 20 December.

Palace's match away to Leeds has been brought forward in exactly the same way.

The Carabao Cup match had originally been scheduled for 16 December, which would have left Palace playing four matches in eight days across three competitions.

The EFL last week moved the tie to 23 December, noting that scheduling conflicts were now "entirely unavoidable" due to the expansion of UEFA's club competitions since the start of last season.

Arsenal said in a statement that Christmas Eve had been mooted as a date for the Carabao Cup tie "but was rejected due to the proximity to Christmas Day, which would impact our supporters and workforce".

A Premier League spokesperson said: "Player welfare is a priority for the Premier League, and we have therefore granted requests from Arsenal and Crystal Palace to move their respective fixtures.

"This comes after the scheduling of matches from other competitions around Premier League fixtures without adequate player recovery time.

"This is also further evidence of the impact the expanded UEFA competitions have on the domestic fixture calendar."

Arsenal added: "The welfare of our players, supporters, and staff is our priority, and we fully understand this change of date may result in challenges for supporters travelling to Liverpool for the game.

"Therefore, we are organising additional supporters' coaches for this match. All coach travel will be subsidised for supporters, priced at #10 for the return journey to Everton."

Palace did also request the change, even though it now leaves them with just 48 hours between their Conference League match against Finnish side KuPS and the Leeds game.
