Rianna Jarrett: Ireland have enough to hold off Belgium rally in play-off second leg

Former Republic of Ireland striker Rianna Jarrett expects Belgium to come out firing in tonight's UEFA Women's Nations League play-off second leg but believes the Girls in Green have enough to hold onto their first leg advantage.

On Friday night, Carla Ward's side earned an outstanding result at Aviva Stadium to beat the Belgians 4-2 in the opening leg of a tie that will decide if Ireland can be promoted into League A of the Nations League at their opponents' expense.

However, it's only half-time in the tie with Ireland looking to finish the job in Leuven tonight.

But Jarrett, who called time on her career earlier this month, believes the Irish side should have enough in the tank to douse any of the anticipated fire from the Red Flames.

"They'll probably be a little bit disappointed with themselves that they conceded the second goal. Definitely a three goal cushion would have been nice going into tonight's game but they're definitely in a strong position," she told Darren Frehill on RTÉ Radio 1's Morning Ireland.

"I think we've got enough in the bank but I think they're approaching it as a separate game altogether. They're kind of disregarding Friday night's game and taking it as a new game which is the right approach.

"But I do think Belgium are going to have a different approach to the game. They kind of sat back in the Aviva, let Ireland have the ball, let us come at them and they played into our hands and I don't see that happening tonight.

"They have everything to play for, they're at risk of being relegated from League A while we're hoping to get promoted.

"So I do think they will come out with more intensity and look to dominate the game but I think we have enough."

The match is also significant for captain Katie McCabe who is set to win her 100th cap.

"Katie's a superstar," said Jarrett of her former team-mate.

"She's one of, if not the most, high profile player in Irish women's sport, I'd say, not only football.

"And she's a great role model for the kids, she won the Champions League last season with Arsenal which is a feat that no Irish player has done since Emma Byrne, Yvonne Tracy and Ciara Grant, so obviously fantastic in that aspect.

"She's gone from strength to strength in the Women's Super League and she's leading this Irish team, and along with Denise O'Sullivan, they're two of the most experienced players left and they've got a lot left in the tank and hopefully they'll continue to drive the game and bring us to a major tournament."
