Sean Dyche and Danny Rohl had mixed fortunes as their respective Nottingham Forest and Rangers reigns got under way in the Europa League.

Nottingham Forest won for the first time since the opening day of the season as Porto were beaten 2-0 at the City Ground.

Ange Postecoglou failed to taste victory during his 39 days in charge, but Dyche savoured success straight away as Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Jesus converted penalties either side of the break.

Rangers, though, were blitzed 3-0 by Brann in Bergen as Rohl suffered a familiar sinking feeling to that of his predecessor Russell Martin.

Having lost their opening two Europa League games to Genk and Sturm Graz, Rangers dropped to bottom spot in the 36-team table with Emil Kornvig, Jacob Sorensen and Noah Holm on target for the Norwegians.

Aston Villa let a one-goal lead slip to lose in the Netherlands

Aston Villa slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat away to Dutch minnows Go Ahead Eagles.

Villa had won their previous five matches in all competitions and went ahead in the fourth minute through Evann Guessand's first goal for the club.

But Mathis Suray and Mats Deijl struck either side of half-time and Emiliano Buendia blazed over a late penalty to compound Villa's misery.

Danish side Midtjylland top the table after winning 3-0 at Maccabi Tel Aviv, with Philip Billing adding to Franculino Dju’s double.

Lyon and Sporting Braga extended their perfect records to three games with respective 2-0 wins over Basel and Red Star Belgrade.

Argentina striker Paulo Dybala scored the 200th goal of his career from the penalty spot but Roma, who introduced Evan Ferguson off the bench in the 74th minute, fell to a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Viktoria Plzen.

Feyenoord overcame Panathinaikos 3-1 as French pair Lille – beaten 4-3 at home by PAOK – and Nice, 2-1 losers at Celta Vigo, fell to defeats.

Real Betis drew 0-0 at Genk, Fenerbache beat Stuttgart 1-0, and Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros won 3-2 at RB Salzburg.

Riad Bajic's goal for AEK Larnaca upset Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park

Meanwhile, in the Conference League, Crystal Palace slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat against AEK Larnaca at Selhurst Park.

Riad Bajic gave the Cypriot side an unexpected lead in the 51st minute as Palace were caught playing out from the back.

Palace – who won their opening league-phase tie away against Dynamo Kyiv – had plenty of pressure as the second half went on.

Larnaca goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic, though, made a couple of fine reaction saves to help secure his side a memorable win over the FA Cup winners.

Aberdeen's mini-revival came to an abrupt halt with a 6-0 thrashing at AEK Athens.

Shamrock Rovers face AEK Athens next in the competition.

Elsewhere, Rijeka's match against Sparta Prague was abandoned after heavy rain.

Play had been suspended after only 11 minutes before the first half was eventually completed following a lengthy delay, but the game in Croatia was then later called off as more downpours left the pitch waterlogged.
