Stephen Kenny's focus sharpened by European ambitions

The race for European football is arguably the most intriguing aspect of the closing stages of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division campaign.

Champions-elect Shamrock Rovers have already secured an automatic place in Europe next year, while their current closest challengers Derry City, who take on Rovers on Sunday, require just a point from their closing two games to guarantee their place.

While the top three qualify for Europe, a fourth spot will open up if heavy-favourites Shamrock Rovers see off relegated Cork City in the FAI Cup final.

Shelbourne currently occupy third in the table on 55 points, with Bohemians (51 points), St Patrick's Athletic (50) and Drogheda United (50) all maintaining a push for continental football.

Bohs’ stalemate at home to St Pat’s on Monday night didn’t push the cause of either side significantly, though Saints boss Kenny admitted it was a fair reflection on the game overall.

"It isn’t really what either team probably wanted," he told RTÉ Sport. "The win (against Shamrock Rovers last Friday) took a lot out of our players. It was a quick turnaround from Friday.

"It was a tough game, the pitch was heavy with all the rain we have had. Bohs were really fired up, overall it was a fair result."

To add more spice to the run in, last years champions Shels play both St Pat’s and Bohs in their final two outings, with Saints’ final home game at Richmond Park coming against Waterford on Friday night.

While the picture is likely to chop and change before everything is confirmed, the former Republic of Ireland manager is hopeful that his side can control their own destiny.

"We have got to try and win those games and give ourselves every chance," he said. "It may well be enough if we win those two games. Or may not. It would certainly put us in a strong position.

"Our home form has been really good. We have played very well there recently.

"We need to bring a big performance and get that victory on Friday to give ourselves every chance."

Bohemians manager Alan Reynolds will not be in the dugout for their games away to Shels and Drogheda after his dismissal at Dalymount Park on Monday night.

With tensions rising in the opening half, referee Paul McLaughlin dished out a number of yellow cards to keep order in check. Shortly after the half-time whistle was blown, Reynolds was red-carded for pushing a smiling Axel Sjoberg as the Pat's defender departed the pitch.

Assistant manager Stephen O’Donnell insisted there was no serious foul play involved.

"I didn’t see it, but these kinds of things happen," he told RTÉ Sport. "There is no malice involved with neither camp against each other, but when there is so much on the line, these things happen."
