Cobh Ramblers' preparations for Friday’s SSE Airtricity Men's First Division play-off have been thrown into chaos with the departure of manager Mick McDermott.
The former Iran and Qatar coach steered the Rams to second place, their highest finish for 18 years, in what was his first season at the helm, but he was absent from Friday’s final game against champions Dundalk.
That led to speculation over his future and on Monday night the club confirmed they have parted ways with McDermott ahead of the upcoming game with Treaty United.
During the 2-1 defeat to Dundalk at St Colman's Park, McDermott posted a message on his Instagram account that heightened talk of an exit.
"Football is pure and simple - about players, fans, relationships and honesty," it read alongside a picture in his office with belongings.
"It’s not a play thing or PlayStation. To the future!"
Assistant coach Richie Holland, who oversaw last Friday's game in McDermott's absence, will take over on a temporary basis.
"We would like to thank Mick for his service to the club this season and wish him well in the future," a club statement read on Monday night.
"Richie Holland will take charge of the team on an interim basis for the upcoming playoffs.
"As we enter this important stage of the season, we encourage all supporters to get behind Richie and the squad.
"The support of our community has always been at the heart of the club, and we look forward to continuing that journey together - through the playoffs and into the future.
"At this time, the club will not be making any further comment."
Cobh will face Treaty over two legs, the second leg in Cork on Tuesday week, with the winner advancing to face either UCD or Bray in the First Division two-legged play-off final.
