Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates his late equaliser in Lisbon

Dominik Szoboszlai's injury-time equaliser for Hungary in Lisbon has had a big impact on the Republic of Ireland’s own World Cup aspirations in Group F.

Three days on from snatching a late win over Ireland, it was the turn of the hosts in Lisbon to come unstuck in stoppage time as the Liverpool star struck after Portugal talisman Ronaldo continued his remarkable goalscoring exploits with two more to the mix to become the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifiers with goals 40 and 41.

Hungary took a surprise lead when Attila Szalai rose above Bernardo Silva to head in his first competitive goal for the national team.

Ronaldo then took over as the hosts appeared set confirm their place at next year's finals in the US, Canada and Mexico as they led 2-1 and hit the woodwork twice.

Goalscorer Szalai also hit the bar before Szoboszlai fired in the equaliser for Hungary from close range to deny the home fans a celebration.

The point moves Hungary a point ahead of Ireland ahead with two games to go, including the possibility of a winner-takes-all showdown at home to the Boys in Green in their final outing.

However, a Portugal win in Dublin next month, coupled with a Hungary win in Yerevan would seal top spot for Roberto Martinez’ side as well as ensure a play-off berth for the Hungarians before the final round of games in Group F.
