Athlone Town know-how of Women's FAI Cup final whirlwind an 'advantage' - Rachel Graham

Athlone Town are heavy favourites to win the Sports Direct Women's FAI Cup final on Sunday and they will have the added advantage of being very accustomed to the occasion compared to their fellow finalists Bohemians, according to Shelbourne midfielder Rachel Graham.

If Athlone do get the better of Bohs at Tallaght Stadium in the season's showpiece, the midlanders will claim the double.

Graham has had plenty of experience facing Athlone in recent cup finals, with Shelbourne having gone up against them in the three previous deciders.

In 2022, Shels beat then first-timers Athlone 2-0 in the final, before the latter avenged that defeat with a penalty shootout victory the following year.

Last year's final was starkly different however, with Graham and co winning 6-1 over an Athlone team that had just won their first league title.

While that loss will have stung the club, the fact that Athlone are going into a fourth final in a row and know what it's like to deal with the whirlwind of the build-up is a significant factor - on top of their dominant form in the league - compared to a more inexperienced Bohs outfit, according to Graham.

"That's something that someone always says, don't play the occasion but I think the best advice you can give to someone is that you need to know it is an occasion. It's not the same as a league game," former Republic of Ireland international Graham said on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast.

"You need to be prepared for a lot more publicity around the game, you're going to do a lot more promotion.

"Even emotionally, you're so drained. (Bohemians are) probably thinking about that final since they beat Treaty in the semi-final and I know you have league games to play (in between) but the reality is your focus is on that big day.

"Even the day is different to a normal league game. It's a much bigger build-up, you're probably eating pre-match as a team. There is an element to it where you need to accept that it's not the same and be prepared for it.

"Athlone have been there and done it, they've won it before, so they know what to do. They know how the day runs.

"Bohs had the final in Wexford but it's not as big an occasion as this one will be, so I think Athlone will have the advantage but if I was to say anything to the Bohs players, it would be to mentally prepare yourself for that side of the game as well."

The aforementioned final in Wexford was the Avenir Sport All-Island Cup decider which is a competition with far less tradition than the Women's FAI Cup and Bohemians lost on penalties to the hosts.

While they have been an up-and-coming club through the league and cup run this year, Bohs will still be massive underdogs on Sunday.

Consequently, a more reactive mindset is their best foot forward against Athlone, according to former Ireland international Méabh De Búrca, who was also speaking on the podcast.

"I think they'll be doing that alright, soaking up that pressure and trying to hit them on the counter-attack," she said.

"Also set-pieces might be a big one for Bohs and they have the likes of Roisin McGovern in there who's really good in the air and then alternatively, from defensive set-pieces, where we know Athlone are so dangerous.

"(Bohs) have Rachael Kelly in goals so they are very solid defensively and they have the likes of Alannah McEvoy as well on the counter-attack with that pace.

"They could pose some problems to Athlone but we know how steady and tight Athlone are, only conceding ten goals in the league this year is phenomenal.

"So I think Bohs will be happy enough not to have that much possession and even recently, I was working on the semi-final, Treaty vs Bohs, and Bohs had the analysts up in the gantry as well, analysing everything, feeding it back down to their management team.

"So I think they'll have their homework done and have everything done to be as best prepared as possible and that's all they need to do.

"They need to have a perfect performance and they need to hope that Athlone slip up."
