Algeria became the 20th team to secure a place at next year's World Cup after inflicting a 3-0 defeat on Somalia to take an unassailable lead in their qualifying group.

Mohamed Amoura netted twice – taking his goals tally in the qualifying campaign to eight – while captain Riyad Mahrez also scored.

Victory for Algeria advanced them to an unassailable 22 points with one match still to play in Group G. It will be their fifth World Cup finals appearance but first since Brazil in 2014.

The top team in each of the nine African groups qualifies automatically for the finals and Algeria are the fourth African side through, following Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, with the Pharaohs qualifying on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Djibouti.

Canada, Mexico and the United States progressed to the finals by virtue of their role as co-hosts of the 23rd World Cup.

The trio of nations have also been joined by Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay from South America, Oceania qualifiers New Zealand, and Asian Football Confederation representatives Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Uzbekistan.

Ghana look poised to become the 21st World Cup qualifier on Sunday, with the 2022 quarter-finalists requiring just a point from their last group fixture at home to Comoros in Accra on Sunday to reach the finals for the fifth time in their history.
