The Republic of Ireland squad to face Portugal and Armenia in the upcoming World Cup qualifying double-header will feature Jimmy Dunne, after the QPR defender was drafted in as cover for Liam Scales, who has suffered a family bereavement.

Scales will miss Saturday night's encounter against Portugal at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, but will be available for the clash with Armenia three nights later in Dublin.

The FAI posted on X: "Jimmy Dunne called into the squad for the Portugal and Armenia matches.

"Defender Liam Scales will not travel to Lisbon due to a family bereavement but will come back into the squad for the Armenia match. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time."

Dunne has been a mainstay in the QPR defence since joining the Championship outfit from Burnley in 2021 and signed a contract extension to remain at Loftus Road during the summer.

The Dundalk native was also handed the club captaincy at the start of the season off the back of a campaign that saw him named the club's Player of the Season and the Players' Player of the Year.

Dunne, who turns 28 later this month, won his only Ireland cap to date in March's 2-1 win over Bulgaria in the Nations League.
