PSG's Joao Neves has been ruled out of Portugal’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Hungary.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez had named the midfielder in his initial squad for the home clash with Ireland on 11 October and the trip to Hungary three days later, but injury has led to his withdrawal with Lazio’s Nuno Tavares called in to replace him.
Al Hilal’s Joao Cancelo had already been ruled out of the double-header through injury, but Nelson Semedo, Matheus Nunes and Rafael Leao have all been added from September’s international window.
Neves has been dealing with a hamstring injury in recent weeks and withdrew after the warm-up of last week’s Champions League win over Barcelona.
Despite that, he was included in the first squad named, reportedly to the dismay of his French club, but he will no longer be an option for Martinez.
