Galway United in line for a summer at Pearse Stadium

Galway United could play a handful of their League of Ireland fixtures at Pearse Stadium in Salthill next season after Galway GAA gave the request a unanimous endorsement.

The proposal, which has been approved by the FAI but requires rubber-stamping by Croke Park, came about as Eamonn Deacy Park is set to undergo drainage works next summer.

United are unlikely to clock up many hours in Salthill as the club have played just four home fixtures in July and August in each of the last two seasons.

Following a meeting of Galway GAA's county committee on Monday night, chairman Paul Bellew told the Connacht Tribune: "Galway GAA is agreeable to the proposal, but it is a decision for Croke Park.

"We fully back the proposal, it has our unanimous backing, and I am hopeful that Croke Park will approve it.

"It will be discussed this weekend, I am going to Dublin myself to present the proposal to officials there."

Playing home matches at a GAA ground would not be a first for United, with the Maroon Army having faced Dutch side Groningen in the UEFA Cup at Páirc an Cháthánaigh in Carraroe in 1986 and Odense of Denmark in the European Cup Winners’ Cup at Ballinderreen's stadium in 1991.

The GAA's Rule 42 prohibited such fixtures taking place at the time, but the games went ahead as both grounds were community-owned.
