Republic of Ireland international Ryan Manning fired in a stunning free-kick as Southampton drew 2-2 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.

The Galway man curled his left-footed low set-piece shot into the bottom corner of Egil Selvik's net to put a rebuilding Saints side on the verge of a second away win of the season in the Championship.

Then, Watford's Nestory Irankunda, who had posed a threat all match, used his right foot to take the aerial route past Southampton and Ireland keeper Gavin Bazunu and into the top corner.

The draw means that both sides have claimed five points from their opening four Championship matches as they seek to bed in under their respective new managers.

Manning, who is in the Irish squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Hungary and Armenia, had already been involved in the game's opening goal after 10 minutes.

His corner was met by a mistimed header from Nathan Wood which struck Cameron Archer and bounced kindly for the Southampton striker to gleefully thump it over the line from three yards.

One-time Boys in Green cap Rocco Vata also got an assist for Watford, floating in a pass into the path of fellow second-half sub Kwadwo Baah who found the bottom corner with a fierce low shot.

The game also saw Ireland midfielder Finn Azaz make his Saints debut after arriving from Middlesbrough earlier this week, featuring for 84 minutes as a starter, while Irish defender James Abankwah started for the opposition Hornets.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough extended their winning start to the Championship campaign and climbed top of the table with a 1-0 win over rock-bottom Sheffield United.

Tommy Conway scored the only goal 19 minutes into the second half to make it four wins out of four in the league for Rob Edwards' side.

But Ruben Selles' miserable start to life at Sheffield United continues, with the Blades still looking for their first point and United's away fans at the Riverside chanting for Selles to be sacked.

Kieffer Moore's header put Wrexham on their way to their first win of the season in the Championship as they ground out a 2-0 victory at Millwall.

It was the Red Dragons' first win in the second tier since they defeated Rotherham on the final day of the 1981-82 season, and it was sealed by Lewis O'Brien's goal deep into stoppage time.

The only thing that took the shine off the result for Phil Parkinson's side was a serious injury to Danny Ward, who was carried off on a stretcher not long before O'Brien's clincher.
