Crystal Palace secured their place in the league phase of the Conference League following a goalless draw against Fredrikstad.

Palace went to Norway with a slender 1-0 first-leg lead after Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the club's first-ever goal on the European stage in last week’s clash at Selhurst Park.

The south Londoners were strong favourites to complete the job on Thursday, but had to grind out a draw on an artificial pitch which appeared to hinder their rhythm.

Nevertheless, the result extends Palace’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 – equalling the longest in the club’s history as a top-flight side – and secures last season’s FA Cup winners their debut appearance in a group stage of a major European competition.

Oliver Glasner’s side would have been keen to extend their one-goal advantage early on and put the tie to bed. But the Premier League outfit offered little going forward in a match of few opportunities.

Last season's FA Cup winners were denied a spot in the Europa League by UEFA last month after the governing body determined that American businessman John Textor had control, or influence, at both Palace and French club Lyon.

"It is a huge achievement to go into the group stage," Glasner told Channel 5. "It was our second goal of the season and we have achieved that by the end of August which is great.

"The first one was winning the Community Shield – which we did – and now, with all of the noise of being demoted to the Conference League, we have done that too.

"We defended excellently and did not give them a chance but on the other side, we know we can and have to play better in possession, but overall it’s important be in the group stage."

Hibernian had Conference League football snatched from their grasp after a breathless 3-3 draw with Legia Warsaw which saw David Gray's men exit at the play-off stage 5-4 on aggregate after extra-time.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg at Easter Road, Hibs fell further behind in the 13th minute when Armenia midfielder Vahan Bichakhchyan drove in from the edge of the box.

However, in a sensational start to the second half in Poland, three goals in 11 minutes from defender Rocky Bushiri, captain Martin Boyle and substitute Miguel Chaiwa had Hibs 3-1 ahead and in the lead on aggregate.

But Jurgen Elitim struck to draw level at 4-4 on aggregate and force extra-time before Mileta Rajovic smashed the ball high into the net to deny Hibs.

Shelbourne booked their spot in the league phase after seeing off Northern Ireland’s Linfield 2-0 at Windsor Park.

Harry Wood and Ali Coote scored in the first half to seal a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate triumph following last week’s chaotic opening rubber in Dublin.

Elsewhere, a goalless draw for Shamrock Rovers at home to Santa Clara was enough to see them progress from the play-offs following their 2-1 first-leg win in Portugal.

Aberdeen were left to rue a hugely-contentious first-half flashpoint in the second leg of their Europa League play-off against FCSB as they were consigned to the Conference League after a 5-2 aggregate defeat by the Romanian champions.

Following a 2-2 draw at Pittodrie last week, the Dons looked comfortable in the second leg in Bucharest's National Arena until the dubious decision to award a penalty to the hosts and send off Alexander Jensen just before the break.

FCSB captain Darius Olaru made no mistake with the penalty and the dynamic of the game instantly changed, with second-half goals from Adrian Sut and Olaru taking the tie beyond the 10-man visitors as the team formerly known as Steaua Bucharest won 3-0 on the night.
