Sheffield Wednesday knocked Yorkshire rivals Leeds out of the Carabao Cup after winning 3-0 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at a virtually empty Hillsborough.

Wednesday captain Barry Bannan, Ike Ugbo and Liam Palmer all hit the target in the shootout for the Championship team, while saved efforts from Leeds pair Joel Piroe and Sean Longstaff sandwiched Dominic Calvert-Lewin's miss.

After Leeds substitute Jayden Bogle had fired a late equaliser to cancel out visiting goalkeeper Karl Darlow’s own goal, a Wednesday side made up mainly of academy players caused a stunning second-round upset.

Wednesday fans answered the call of the club’s Supporters Trust to boycott the tie in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri and only a half-full South Stand was in use at Hillsborough apart from the away end.

Huddersfield reached the third round with a 6-5 penalty shootout win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Having drawn 1-1 in normal time, the game was decided on penalties and the shootout reached sudden death, where Milan Aleksic's spot-kick was saved for Huddersfield to snatch victory.

Both sides showed numerous changes from their weekend starting line-ups and the League One outfit went ahead in the ninth minute through Leo Castledine’s volley.

However, Castledine’s fellow Chelsea loanee Marc Guiu made an impact to equalise with his first Sunderland goal in the 84th minute to take the tie to penalties.

Newcastle target Jorgen Strand Larsen came off the bench to earn Wolves a 3-2 victory over West Ham.

Rodrigo Gomes' strike after Hwang Hee-chan’s penalty had come back off a post had given Vitor Pereira’s side an early advantage in the battle of the Premier League’s bottom two, but headers from Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta turned the game on its head.

However, Strand Larson, the subject of a rejected big-money bid from the Magpies, had the final say with goals after 82 and 84 minutes to condemn the Hammers to a third defeat of the new season.

Fabio Carvalho and substitute Igor Thiago ensured Brentford secured a 2-0 victory at Bournemouth over their top-flight rivals, while Burnley needed Oliver Sonne’s stoppage-time winner to edge past Derby 2-1.

Championship leaders Stoke suffered a rude awakening as Will Swan’s header and a second goal from Brad Halliday handed League One Bradford a half-time lead before George Lapslie added the third in a 3-0 win.

Substitute Kieffer Moore stabbed home a last-gasp winner as Wrexham got the better of Championship rivals Preston 3-2 at Deepdale after Ryan Hardie and then Harry Ashfield had cancelled out goals by Lewis Dobbin and Liam Lindsay.

It was a more straightforward night for Southampton as Cameron Archer, Ryan Fraser and substitute Kuryu Matsuki found the back of the net in a 3-0 victory at Norwich.

However, Birmingham slipped to a first defeat of the campaign as Jaheim Headley fired League One Port Vale into the third round with the only goal at St Andrew’s.

Kamarl Grant’s 76th-minute strike proved decisive as Millwall beat fellow Championship side Coventry 2-1, while Swansea saw off League One Plymouth 5-3 on penalties.

League Two Cambridge romped to a 3-1 victory over Championship side Charlton, thanks to goals from James Brophy, Kylian Kouassi and Zak Bradshaw, but Bromley’s adventure ended when they lost 5-4 to Wycombe in a shootout.

Accrington were made to pay for Josh Wood’s dismissal as goals from Owen Bailey and Ben Close handed League One Doncaster a 2-0 victory.

Elsewhere, Cardiff beat Cheltenham 3-0, Reading were 2-1 victors over AFC Wimbledon, Barnsley came from behind to defeat Rotherham 2-1 and Stockport lost 1-0 at Wigan.
