Germany international Malick Thiaw has become Newcastle's third summer signing after completing a switch from AC Milan.
The 24-year-old central defender has put pen to paper on a long-term deal after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee understood to be worth an initial €35million.
In doing so, he brought an end to a three-year stay at the San Siro, where he made 85 senior appearances, one of them in a 0-0 Champions League draw with the Magpies in Milan in September 2023.
Thiaw, who underwent his medical on Monday, said: "I’m really excited to join this massive club.
"I can’t wait to start training and to get to know my new team-mates and all the staff.
"The gaffer (Eddie Howe) showed me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and the club itself, which is really exciting.
"I think Newcastle speaks for itself. It’s a great club, a big club with passionate fans who I can’t wait to see at St James’ Park."
Thiaw joins Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in heading for St James’ Park this summer and his arrival strengthens a central defensive pool which already includes Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles.
Liverpool are in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and are pursuing a deal for Parma teenager Giovanni Leoni, RTÉ Sport understands.
Arne Slot's Reds have been busy since winning last season’s Premier League, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among the summer arrivals.
Liverpool have also seen a £110million (€127m) bid rejected in recent weeks for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but defensive reinforcements appear to be the current priority.
It is understood the Anfield outfit are in discussions with Palace over a deal for England international Guehi.
The 25-year-old captained the Eagles to victory against Liverpool in Sunday’s Community Shield at Wembley and is out of contract next summer.
Guehi starred in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final and will want regular game time ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
Liverpool are hopeful that the former Chelsea defender wants to join them but sources have denied reports that personal terms have been agreed.
Liverpool are also interested in 18-year-old defender Leoni from Parma and are in talks with the Serie A side.
The Italy Under-19 international spent time with Padova and Sampdoria before moving to Emilia-Romagna last year.

Everton have completed the signing of England winger Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
The 29-year-old has been looking for an exit from Etihad Stadium after making only seven Premier League starts for Pep Guardiola's side last season, seeking regular football ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
"I’m over the moon to have signed for Everton – it’s massive for me, honestly," Grealish said. "This is a great club, with great fans.
"As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. On social media, I’ve been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there’s that side of it as well and that’s another reason why I chose Everton.
"I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I’ve had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I’m sure I will."
Grealish has won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup since joining City for a British-record transfer fee in the summer of 2021.
He was integral to the City side that completed a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble in 2022/23 but was hampered by injury in the following campaign and has since fallen down the pecking order.
Grealish said he was "heartbroken" to have been left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad last summer and is targeting a return to the international arena under Thomas Tuchel as the World Cup looms large.
Grealish has chosen to wear the number 18 at Everton in honour of two former England internationals.
"There is a reason for (choosing number 18)," he explained. "There were other numbers, but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here.
"So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point.
"I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he’s happy as well."
Grealish is Everton’s sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Adam Aznou.
"We welcome Jack to Everton and we’re very pleased to have him on board," manager David Moyes said.
"I think we’re getting him at a good time because he’s experienced, he understands the Premier League and we’re all fully aware of the levels he’s capable of performing to.
"I know Jack’s ambition is to get back into the England squad, so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season."Everton launch their new campaign at newly-promoted Leeds on Monday before playing their first Premier League game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium against Brighton on 24 August.
West Ham have seen a bid of up to £30million for Mateus Fernandes rejected out of hand by Southampton.
The 21-year-old was a shining light in a season to forget as the relegated Saints narrowly avoided the Premier League's record low points tally.
Fernandes joined Southampton from Sporting Lisbon last August in a deal until 2029 and won the fans' player of the season award.
The Portugal Under-21s international came off the bench in Saturday's Championship opener against Wrexham and West Ham, one of numerous interested parties, have made a bid reaching up to £30m.
Southampton are understood to have felt lowballed by the Hammers' offer as they value in Fernandes in excess of £50m.
The Saints have already played hard ball with Everton this summer over homegrown talent Tyler Dibling.
Tottenham Hotspur have turned their attention back to Eberechi Eze and entered talks with Crystal Palace over a potential transfer for the England international.
Spurs have held a long-standing interest in Eze, dating back to his time at QPR, but he subsequently signed for Palace in 2020.
Eze has since developed into one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League and new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has set his sights on landing the 27-year-old before the summer transfer window closes.
Frank is in need of creativity after chief playmaker James Maddison recently ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and with fellow midfielder Dejan Kulusevski still sidelined for the foreseeable future after his own knee surgery.
After a failed pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White last month, Spurs have this week ramped up their transfer activity, opening talks with Manchester City on Monday over the signing of versatile attacker Savinho and now in discussions with Palace over Eze.
England midfielder Eze has two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park and has helped the club to FA Cup and Community Shield success during recent months, the latter triumph achieved via a penalty shootout win over Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.
A release clause in the region of €79m remains active in Eze's current terms, but is set to expire on Friday.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will activate the clause or attempt to negotiate a more favourable deal, but the Europa League champions are determined to sign Eze, who scored 14 times and produced 11 assists in 43 appearances during the 2024-25 season.
Spurs head coach Frank will be quizzed on transfers when he faces the media on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday evening's Super Cup clash with PSG in Udine (Live on RTÉ2/RTÉ Player).
Paris St Germain have completed the signing of defender Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth.
The Ukraine international has agreed a five-year contract with the European champions in a deal reportedly worth an initial €63million, plus €3m in performance-related add-ons.
Zabarnyi, 22, joined the Cherries in January 2023 from Dynamo Kyiv and went on to make 86 appearances for the Premier League side in all competitions.
"I'm very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain, the best club in the world, with the best project," he told the Ligue 1 club's website.
"I am here to give everything I have on the pitch and I’m looking forward to making my debut and meeting the fans."
Zabarnyi is the third first-choice defender to leave Bournemouth this summer following the departure of Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid for €58m and Milos Kerkez’s move to Liverpool in a €46m deal.
During his time on the south coast, he played an instrumental role in back-to-back record-breaking finishes by helping Andoni Iraola’s team twice surpass the club’s highest points total in the Premier League.
The Kiev-born centre-back, who has 49 international caps, was voted the Cherries’ supporters’ player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign.
PSG won the Champions League for the first time in May after beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich.
Luis Enrique’s French champions, who have also added goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to their squad during the current transfer window, face Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday before beginning their domestic title defence on Sunday away to Nantes.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: "Illia is a talented international player and a great professional.
"He will make a major contribution to everything that we are building long-term at Paris Saint-Germain."
