Shelbourne must plan without first choice goalkeeper Conor Kearns for Wednesday's Champions League second round qualifying first leg tie against Azerbaijani champions Qarabag at Tolka Park.
Shels manager Joey O'Brien confirmed that the Red's netminder, who went off injured in last week's first round qualifier against Linfield, has a hamstring strain and will be out of action for a number of weeks.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference in north Dublin today, O'Brien confirmed that Lorcan Healy, who replaced Kearns between the posts in Belfast, will start against Qarabag.
Reds captain Mark Coyle who also suffered an injury last week has been passed fit to play and is available for selection.
Shels have moved quickly to bring in a reinforcement in the goalkeeping area, with Wessel Speel joining on loan from Minnesota United.
The 23-year-old Dutch goalkeeper joins the Reds on a deal until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.
Speel has made appearances in both the US Open Cup and MLS this season.
He began his career in the Netherlands with Jong FC Utrecht in the Eerste Divisie before making the move to the United States
Speel said: "I’m very excited to join Shelbourne for this important stretch of the season and have heard great things about the fans and the atmosphere at Tolka Park. I can’t wait to get started."
O’Brien said the time was right to bring in Speel, perhaps with the injury to Kearns in mind.
He said: "We’ve been aware of Wessel for the last few months and the opportunity to bring him in came at the right time for us.
"He’ll bring strong competition to an already talented group of goalkeepers. We’re looking forward to working with him closely and helping him continue to improve in a really strong environment."
