John Patrick Finn, Josh Honohan, Josh Keeley and Killian Phillips receive Republic of Ireland call-ups

The uncapped quartet of Josh Honohan, Josh Keeley, John Patrick Finn and Killian Phillips have been included in the Republic of Ireland's 24-man squad for next month's friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg.

Captain Seamus Coleman returns to the squad as well as Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer, Ipswich Town's Sammie Szmodics and centre-back Andrew Omobamidele, who has impressed with his performances in Ligue 1 this season for Strasbourg.

Winger Festy Ebosele, who has recently returned to full fitness for Turkish Super Lig side Istanbul Basaksehir, also returns to the international fold.

Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has elected to leave out the vast majority of EFL Championship players to aid rest and recovery in their off-season.

Ireland are set to face Senegal on Friday, 6 June, with kick-off at 7.45pm at Aviva Stadium, before heading to Luxembourg for the second fixture on Tuesday, 10 June, with kick-off at 7.45pm (Irish time).

"Now it is three weeks until the camp. It is pretty unusual to do it, but the reason is that we would like the players to know if they are in and out early so they can prepare for their holiday or the camp in advance," Hallgrimsson said of the early squad announcement.

"Of course there is a disadvantage to announcing the squad early, that three weeks is a long time in football, so a lot of things can change and we take that into account."

Hallgrimsson added: "This June window has been tough or tricky for Ireland in the past. I would guess the reason is that, after a long season – like the Championship, playing two games every week and a lot of matches in the end of season – players are tired, both physically and mentally.

"After the season they switch off and then just to keep fitness level for a month until two friendlies is tricky and tough, but I think also mentally it's tough for them.

"So what we want now, most of all, is that these players take a good off season and come flying in pre-season, and in September we will benefit from that rest."
