Republic of Ireland international Marissa Sheva has signed for Sunderland in the Women's Championship.

The 27-year old Pennsylvania-born midfielder joins the English second tier club having been unattached for the first couple of months of the year, since departing the Portland Thorns in December.

Sunderland manager Mel Reay said they'd been tracking Sheva since she became available at the end of last year.

"We believe she has the attacking qualities to add value to the team, and we are excited to see her finish the season with us and hit the ground running into the next," Reay said.

While Sheva has spent most of her career to date in the States, she did previously play for Spanish outfit Deportivo Alavés Gloriosas. She now returns for a second spell in European club football.

"I'm so happy to have signed with Sunderland and be a part of this incredible club," Sheva said. "I'm excited to work with Mel, Steph and the group of girls that have been putting in the work all season. We've only got a few games to go, but I'm excited to help the team finish the season strong."

Sheva has earned 11 caps for Republic of Ireland, qualifying through her maternal grandparents in Donegal. After making her debut in a friendly against Chile in February 2023, she subsequently featured in all three of Ireland's group games in the 2023 World Cup, starting in the opener against Australia.

She was recently included in Carla Ward's Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming international double header against Greece.
